Angiites are evolved Squallids created by Metastae and Demulcents when the Metastae's overcoat mass becomes too great, and act as a final, refined method of expelling gangrenous mass as energy. A group of Angiites is called a rumen.

Physical Description

Angiites are Squallids who have been given added mass and promoted via a form of gangrenous rebirth. They are quite a bit larger than Squallids, being exactly twice the height of their smaller siblings (5' 4", or 163cm) with more robust frames, but ironically, their bodies are not much more massive than a Squallid due to the presence of a large body cavity that the Angiite uses to lase magic. Additionally, much of their barrel is covered by long flaps of gangrenous skin, which flay outwards after firing off magic, allowing the Angiite to rapidly cool itself after burning excess body mass for magical energy.

Behaviour

Angiites act as final measures against their host Metasta's inability to fully stop growth. They consolidate body mass in dehydrated, compact matter, and when they have a sufficiently large "pellet", can use it to power an internal pathway that metabolizes the collected biomass into high energy blood magic that is expelled as a tight beam through the throat and mouth. The resultant attack produced is similar in effect to an Anchorage's Emplacement beam, but trading a much shorter firing cycle for nearly triple the per-time period output. Of course, the advantages of this in combat are obvious, but in peacetime, the fact that this is a necessary waste disposal technique can cause issues: An Angiite must find something unimportant to fire at or, more ideally, a well-maintained Threshold.

Somewhat humourously, Angiites' role as excess body mass disposal means they effectively act the same way both in and out of combat, storing pellets until such storage is no longer possible, and then finding something to empty all the consolidated magic into. To this end, they show a slightly frenetic, restless side, always keeping an eye out for when a valid Threshold is nearby.

Genetic Description

While the obvious expectation is that Angiites do not vary much in makeup from their smaller siblings, Angiites actually sport a number of triggers stolen from Anchorage buildings, with trace amounts of a Haetin-esque material found alloying their body cavity cells. This is assumed to relate to the high energy loads that they work with, but also highlights the unusual nature of Haetin as a building material.

Hyacinth's Thoughts

It brings me such great relief when a Metasta finally pieces together everything it needs for an Angiite... It's a sign that they're now capable of taking care of themselves. I've made a habit of arranging something special for the Metastae when they finally reach that point; usually arranging a special batch of bread with honey and insect meat in it. It's a small thing, but it's nice to give them something pleasant.

Metanarrative

The Angiite arose from wider Metasta lore, which mostly boiled down to "how do you deal with the body mass problem without making them scale infinitely". The Angiite was thus made as something that could burn the excess mass, while also tying into why Thresholds act as giant batteries.
