Federations are the heaviest Analogues constructed by Anchorages and Serfs. They act as heavy mechanized carriers and frontline bulwarks in combat, giving rise to Provinces and protecting non-combatant components of the Anchorage-Serf ecosystem. A group of Federations is known as a league.

Physical Description

Federations are substantially heavy Analogues, standing even larger than the Anchorages that construct them at a whopping 8' 4" (254cm). Their physiques are quite bulky, with wide frames draped in a skirt of long blades. This skirt of blades normally hangs down like plate mail; flat and fairly stiff, with some give to prevent breakage. However, when the Federation needs to attack, it can unhitch the chains holding the blades in place, enabling free motion along their undercarriage. This also allows blades to be replaced when necessary. Additionally, Federations carry a large, tinted dome on their backs, which holds inside the production machinery used for building and maintaining Provinces. While this dome is normally opaque, occasional flashes of operating machinery can be seen from outside in low light when Provinces are being worked on. Like Colonies, Federations also keep reserve Haetin in a semi-liquid state, which they wear as a mane.

Behaviour

Federations are very slow, heavy combatants, made for getting in the way of enemy attacks and absorbing blows that would kill most puppets with minimal topical damage thanks to their heavily reinforced Haetin hull armor. They are the only non-Titan puppets to sport an average survivability level higher than that of a Praetor, owed largely to their layered armor. In addition to their durability, Federations also sport integrated production facilities for constructing and supplying Provinces. They deploy these Provinces at the start of battle (always two to a Federation, never more), arming them solely with machine gun ammunition unless prompted by certain signals a Serf, Delta, or a Myrmecoph, at which point they will trade some normal ammunition for a heavy armor-piercing missile.

A Federation's primary method of attack is performed by unhitching the chains holding its armor blades and then quickly twisting its body, causing the blades to flare out and spin rapidly in a chainsaw-esque manner. While this attack has minimal effect on targets at range, it doesn't need to; it is largely for dealing with other ultraheavy adversaries, or groups of smaller ones. A Federation can also use its blades to conduct healing magic when spinning; this healing magic can heal puppets, other Analogues, or even elementals spawned by Totems.

When outside of combat, Federations act as chaperones for smaller Analogues; Colonies and Provinces in particular. They can be found gently nudging and soothing the smaller Analogues, in what seems to be a replica of the parental instincts demonstrated by Reconcilants. More notably is that the presence of a Federation is one of the few things (besides Serf activity) that can help settle the restless hooves of a Colony Analogue, and thus, while Federations are quite rare, it is not uncommon for a Federation to be the second or third Analogue built among a city of Anchorages (after a Colony or two).

Genetic Description

While, like other Analogues, Federations don't have any sort of extensive biological makeup, there is much consideration around their behavioural characteristics and how they adhere to other expectations of puppet behaviour; namely the comparisons they have to Reconcilants. Their large form, utilization of winged spawn, and parental traits all point to deliberate inspiration and even outright plagiarism, but the militarization of their design seems to imply some greater modus operandi in regards to how Analogues are designed and put in play.

Metanarrative

Like Colonies, Federations originated from my Into The Breach mod. Now, there's obvious overlap between Federations and Reconcilants, but I've chosen to use that as a leaping point for their lore and fleshing out rather than a hindrance. Reconcilants will always be the original subpuppet commander; Federations are just a different variant, having a far more limited pool of subpuppets and being analogues.
